How does the fortune telling con work?
The fortune telling/spiritual work scam is basically what is known as a "confidence crime". In this particular case, it's an especially mean one because of the large sums of money involved.

The Gypsy fortune telling/spiritual work scam also involves a degree of brainwashing, threats and coercion on the part of the Gypsy con artist. The spiritualist needs to know that you totally believe what she's telling you and that you believe in her powers so that she's certain then of her influence over your mind and your judgment. When she feels safe that this is the case, she can begin putting the squeeze on you, taking your money under the guise of performing "special work" and prayers, and regularly reinforcing her control over you.

The basic pattern of the scam goes like this:
  1. The spiritualist gains her victim's trust, and acts kind, sympathetic and mothering when she can tell the victim is troubled or looking for answers (why else would they be there?)
  2. The fortune teller offers the victim some vague information that the victim then interprets as being proof of the adviser's powers.
  3. During readings, she gleans as much personal information about the victim as she can. If the Gypsy is talented, she'll later rephrase what she's learned in such a way as to make it sound like she's got some special insight into the situation (remember, you're emotionally involved at this point and looking for help so you don't readily see that she did that. Plus, she's a terrific actress with all the confidence in the world.)
  4. She then asks for a smaller payment -- maybe $100 to $180 to pay for a "blessed candle" to help chase away the evil spirits and protect the victim while she looks into their "case".
  5. She happily tells the victim that, although the darkness around them is strong, her powers are stronger and that she can remove it. She'll set up some dollar amount needed for the special work to be done. This may be in the hundreds of dollars (she's working up to the big scam and needs to test and build on her control over you yet).
  6. If her control over her victim is setting in and building as she keeps making hopeful predictions and tells the victim how things are improving, she'll check to make sure the victim's completely trusting in her -- and that she has her victim completely believing in the danger of what could happen should they not let her do her work.
  7. Once she knows the victim is under her control mentally, they Gypsy spiritualist will then inform her victim very seriously that she in fact underestimated the power of the evil surrounding that person. Stronger prayers and candles are needed. Perhaps even crystals. And the Gypsy and her "church" need to do very special work on the victim's case, which the Gypsy and her church are very willing to do because they want to help the victim and do God's work, but it's going to take a special sacrifice on the victim's part.
  8. The cycle continues until the victim either a.) is bankrupt and alone (seriously) or b.) finally gains the strength to go back to his intuition telling him something's wrong, and get over the fear that the Gypsy fraud is going to unleash evil spirits on him in retaliation for leaving her (which doesn't happen obviously).
